Sharing is caring!

Networking professionals have to now change their approach to networking design; due to the rapid change, that is happening in technology.

The introduction of cloud, the changes in IT infrastructure, the rise of visualization and Artificial Intelligence, has led networks that are under a lot of pressure, to evolve rapidly, in order to accommodate rapid change happening in technology.

The networking area, is facing a lot of demand, and it has to focus on more software based network design, than the traditional speeds and feeds provided, by hardware.

A lot of new options are coming to them, who have to redesign these networks, and the ways, in which network designers work, are changing tremendously as well.

Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN)

Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is one of the new technologies, which are coming to networks.

SD-WAN, a specific application of software defined networks (SDN) applied to wide area network (WAN) connection.

This type of network -SD-WAN- are used to connect enterprise networks.

SD-WAN provides stable networks Branch offices and data centers; which are spread all throughout the world have .

Software-defined networking has not reached the masses just yet, but this technology is trending in the network community

Using a software approach, members of the SD-WAN revolution, are seeking to move more of the network controls, to the cloud.

The WAN connections often used technology which needs proprietary hardware, in order for it to work properly.

The Benefits of SD-WAN

Cost effective, reliable and provides more security.

  • This type of network simplifies branch office networking and assures optimal application performance, which is great for business.
  • SD-WAN provides users the ability to monitor and manage traffic, from applications and software, rather than going to physical devices.
  • SD-WAN is now flexible and agile; because the information needed to manage large networks; can now be seen and managed from a mobile device.

The abilities that SD-WAN provides network designers, allows them to securely make private and public connections to networks; in order to control central networks, and manage real-time traffic.

Via a central controller, network administrators, are able to program edge appliances; which minimizes or eliminates the need to go and manually configure traditional router in branch location.

An organization, would be able to put mission-critical and quality sensitive traffic over private links; while providing broadband connectivity for most interoffice networks.

Technologies such as Dynamic Multipoint VPN, Cisco Performance Routing (PfR) and real time quality measurements; make routing configurations very complex; because these technologies require network administrators, to manually configure WAN connection.

Of course there are types to SD-WAN architecture, because organizations have different needs for their networks

Premises based SD-WAN is a type of SD-WAN architecture; which involves an appliance, placed on site to achieve the functionalities of SD-WAN.

MPLS-based SD-WAN solutions is another type of SD-WAN architecture, which involves multiple routers, placed at network endpoints.

Internet-based SD-WAN architecture, also uses multiple routers, at a customer’s location, using public hot spots

SD-WAN truly puts the control of a network; in the hands of customers, after they have been designed and configured it; and if customers require further, configuration or help they can always reach the vendor of their product.
